Proliferation Rates of Bovine Primary Muscle Cells Relate to Liveweight and Carcase Weight in Cattle
نویسندگان
چکیده
Muscling in cattle is largely influenced by genetic background, ultimately affecting beef yield and is of major interest to the beef industry. This investigation aimed to determine whether primary skeletal muscle cells isolated from different breeds of cattle with a varying genetic potential for muscling differ in their myogenic proliferative capacity. Primary skeletal muscle cells were isolated and cultured from the Longissimus muscle (LM) of 6 month old Angus, Hereford and Wagyu X Angus cattle. Cells were assessed for rate of proliferation and gene expression of PAX7, MYOD, MYF5, and MYOG. Proliferation rates were found to differ between breeds of cattle whereby myoblasts from Angus cattle were found to proliferate at a greater rate than those of Hereford and Wagyu X Angus during early stages of growth (5-20 hours in culture) in vitro (P < 0.05). The proliferation rates of myoblasts during early stages of culture in vitro were also found to be positively related to the liveweight and carcase weight of cattle (P < 0.05). Gene expression of MYF5 was also found to be significantly down-regulated in WagyuX compared with Angus cattle (P < 0.05). These findings suggest that early events during myogenesis are important for determining liveweight and caracase weights in cattle.

Development and Cytogenetic Characterization of a Continuous Bovine Kidney Cell Line (IRKHBK) and Evaluation its Susceptibility to some Viruses
In this syudy a continuous bovine kidney cell line derived from a primary bovine kidney cells was established for the first time in Iran. The cells were originating from two-day-old normal male calf of Holstein breed. The cell cultures were continuously passaged following complete proliferation of primary cells. The specific properties or characteristics of the cell were defined using cytogenet...

The comparative performance of shaded and unshaded Zebu cross steers was studied in a Queensland feedlot from January to May 1992. The provision of shade gave no significant (P > 0.05) advantage in liveweight gain (182 V. 177 kg), feed conversion ratio (9.4 v. 9.8 kg of fresh feed/kg liveweight gain), carcase weight, dressing percentage, P8 rump fat, eye muscle area, saleable meat yield, meat c...
متن کاملResponse in Liveweight and Carcase Gain to Type of Anabolic Agent and Repeat Implantation of Steers and Heifers on Feedlot
An experiment using 610 steer and heifer calves compared the weight gain and carcase characteristics of cattle treated with the short-acting anabolics Ralgro and Synovex and two new as yet unregistered products, Crestar F and M. The consistency and duration of response, and the effect of re-implantation after 42 days were measured. Overall, when both sexes were combined, there were significant ...
متن کاملEstimation of Carcase Composition of Beef Bulls
The regression of muscle:bone ratio on carcase weight was 0.0055 k 0.0017 kg. The mean muscle: bone ratio adjusted to a carcase weight of 213 kg was 3.99 * 0.20. There was little variation in muscle:bone ratio among individuals and the differences between sire progeny groups were not significant. However, the number of progeny within each group was small and a wider sampling is required to esta...
متن کاملGenetic Analyses on Carcase Characters of Australian Wagyu Beef Cattle
Producers of Wagyu beef have unique opportunities to assess high value markets, where carcase value is determined primarily on marbling score. To date, there have been limited genetic studies of this breed, especially in Australia. Newly developed image analysis equipment could be a useful tool to analyse carcase characters. This study estimated genetic parameters for carcase traits measured by...
